Bellerby & Co. Globemakers was founded in 2008 by Peter Bellerby, who was looking for a globe for his father’s 80th birthday. When he couldn’t find a globe that met his standards, he decided to make one himself. “Initially, my plan was to make one for him and maybe one for me if I had the budget,” explain Bellerby.
He decided to use what he learned and start his own company, eventually moving into its current location in Stoke Newington. In the company’s workspace, a small group of makers meticulously work in an open environment with large windows installed between test pages of watercolor paints and hanging strips of paper flapping from clothespins. Applying paper to spherical globe globes (known as “goring”) takes at least a year.
“It’s been something that’s been an incredible challenge. The whole design process, the whole way of making anything using a sphere at its base, at its centerpiece is fraught with different problems and issues because you are multiplying every error by pi,” stated Bellerby.
