Double-decker driverless tram design by Ponti Design

The studio Ponti Design has created a functional double-decker driverless tram designed for the city of Hong Kong with an innovative interior design to provide social distancing and encourage citizens to use public transportation safely after the post-Covide era, it also addresses the increased demand for public transport.

The product design firm, founded by Italian designer Andrea Ponti, wanted to provide a more contemporary version of conventional public transportation in order to better respond to today’s environment, where pandemic prevention is crucial.

The design of the Island is driven by several key objectives: to reduce carbon emissions; reduce traffic congestion, and increase passenger capacity and operate along existing railway lines.

” We wanted to reimagine public transport in the post-Covid era from a prevention perspective. Especially in the densely populated city of Hong Kong, where social distancing is hard to achieve. The idea of designing a tram is no coincidence: trams are one of the city’s landmarks and the tramways celebrate their 115th anniversary this year. The concept of social distancing, which limits people’s freedom to move and interact became the design challenge and focal point for the new concept.”
