Four Energia concept: Embraer to achieve net-zero aviation by 2050

Embraer unveiled the Four Energia concept planes as part of the Brazilian plan to make aviation more sustainable. The company also expressed its commitment to achieving net-zero in aviation in 2050. Embraer released the Energia family’s specifications live via YouTube from its São José dos Campos, Brazil manufacturing facility to coincide with COP26, the global climate summit.

Embraer S.A. is a Brazilian multinational aerospace firm that produces commercial, military, executive, and agricultural aircraft as well as aeronautical support services. It was formed in 1969 in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, where its headquarters are still located. The company is the third-largest manufacturer of civil planes behind Boeing and Airbus.

Embraer has joined with a multinational collaboration of engineering schools, aeronautical research institutions, and small- and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) to better understand energy harvesting, storage, thermal management, and their applications for sustainable aircraft propulsion.

The Energia family includes four concept planes that incorporate a variety of propulsion systems: electric, hydrogen fuel cell, dual-fuel gas turbine, and hybrid-electric. Embraer believes there is enough demand for 4,000 airplanes if the range and technology are varied.

Arjan Meijer, President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, will speak about these ideas. According to Meijer, the decision to release these futureshocks at this particular moment was not made on impulse. He explains,

“We picked the reveal day very much to align with the COP 26 event. The focus of the of the world right now is on sustainability, and on moving to a greener future. Embraer has been working diligently over the last couple of years on new concepts, and over the last 12 months, we’ve really defined how new technologies can be translated into concepts that we can see on the horizon. We want to show the world the vision that Embraer has of the future.”

The most ambitious Embraer Energia family aircraft concepts is the E50-H2GT, which will be capable of operating a gas turbine with either hydrogen or sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The E50-H2GT will accommodate 35-40 passengers in seats and have a range of 350-500 nm.

“Unlike the other concepts, this aircraft does not have an electric motor or a battery, instead it uses dual-fuel gas turbine propulsion. On short missions, on short ranges below 350 nm, 100 percent hydrogen energy can be used for longer routes, SAF or Jet-A will be used,” Luis Carlos Affonso, Embraer’s Sr. VP of Engineering, Technology and Corporate Strategy said in a statement.
