What is Lahmajoun?

Lahmajoun is a popular dish in the Levant, an area that includes Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, and Israel. It is sometimes also referred to as Lebanese pizza or Armenian pizza. Lahmajoun is made with a thin dough that is topped with beef or lamb, onions, tomatoes, and spices. The dough is then baked until it is crispy.

There are many different variations of lahmajoun depending on the region where it is made. For example, in Aleppo, Syria, lahmajoun is typically made with a sweeter dough and topped with pomegranate seeds. In Lebanon, lahmajoun is often made with a thinner dough and topped with a variety of vegetables in addition to meat.

The Origins of Lahmajoun

Lahmajoun comes from the Arabic words “lahm,” meaning “meat,” and “ja’un,” meaning “to spread.” This dish is popular in countries like Lebanon, Turkey, Armenia, and Syria. It is believed to have originated in Armenia, where it was originally made with lamb meat. Today, you can find Lahmajoun made with beef, chicken, or even vegetarian toppings.

If you want lahmajoun but can’t make it to the Middle East any time soon, don’t worry! This dish is actually quite easy to make at home. All you need is some ground beef, onions, spices, and a little bit of time. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. In a bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef with 1 chopped onion, 1 teaspoon of paprika, 1 teaspoon of cumin, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Mix everything together until well combined.
  3. To make the dough for the flatbreads, mix together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 cup of water in a bowl. Stir until everything comes together to form a soft dough. If the dough seems too dry, add more water a little bit at a time until it comes together.
  4. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Use a biscuit cutter or glass to cut out 3-inch rounds from the dough. You should end up with 8-10 rounds total.
  5. Place the rounds on an ungreased baking sheet and top each one with 2 tablespoons of the beef mixture. Spread it out evenly over the surface of each round, being careful not to overdo it or the flatbreads will be difficult to fold later on.
  6. Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes until the edges are lightly browned and the beef is cooked through. Serve immediately with chopped parsley or mint leaves for garnish (optional). Enjoy!
