Tattooed sculptures by Fabio Viale

Fabio Viale is an artist and sculptor who has defied expectations by mixing two distinct forms of art: sculpture and tattoos. Fabio Viale was born in Cuneo in 1975 and now resides and works in Turin. He is recognized for his marble recreations of ancient sculptures, as well as his huge Tattooed works.

The artist, who has a passion for mythology, often creates “heavy scenes” from ancient myths as his Tattooed sculptures. According to the artist, he prefers combining art history with contemporary symbols, rather than creating new pieces, recreating well-known classical works. He says that performing so allows him to comprehend the original creator while also giving his personal touch.

One of the artist’s most famous Tattooed sculptures is the Laocoon. The original Laocoön Group is a marble sculpture representing the tragic, yet revered legendary tale of Laocoön and his sons. Since it was excavated in Rome in 1506 and put on public display at the Vatican, where it remains, the statue of Laocoön and His Sons, also known as the Laocoön Group, has been one of ancient art’s most renowned pieces. On his representation, Fabio Viale tattooed from mid-thigh to the neck and down to his wrists, depicting the Seven Deadly Sins from “The Inferno.”

The Laocoon is a great example of how Fabio Viale updates a classic classical sculpture with his unique style. He tattoos the body of the statue, adding his own contemporary interpretation to it. As a result, he breathes new life into these ancient works and gives them a new meaning for today’s world.

Fabio Viale has exhibited his work all over the world, and his Tattooed sculptures can be found in various museums and private collections.
