In the 11th century, a woman named Lady Godiva rode through the streets of Coventry, England naked–or so the legend goes. Why did she do it? The story goes that she was protesting her husband’s decision to implement unfair taxes on the people of Coventry. While the details of the story may be disputed, one thing is for sure: Lady Godiva was ahead of her time. Not only was she one of the first recorded feminists, but she also employed some pretty savvy marketing techniques to get her message across!
The Naked Truth
There are many different versions of the Lady Godiva legend, but they all center around Lady Godiva’s husband, Leofric, Earl of Mercia. In some versions of the story, Lady Godiva begs her husband to lower taxes before she takes her ride; in others, she simply does it without asking. But in all versions, Lady Godiva’s naked ride through town is a defiant act meant to shame her husband into giving in to her demands.
Interestingly enough, there’s no historical evidence that Lady Godiva ever actually existed–but that doesn’t mean she isn’t an important figure in history. In fact, many historians believe that the legend of Lady Godiva was created by medieval monks as a way to discourage women from challenging the established order. Even so, the popular image of Lady Godiva as a fierce feminist warrior has endured throughout the centuries.
